Travels of a Rock - Jessica Bruce
Plymouth Rock is a place that I never knew existed until this article. The history, adventures, and devistations that were experienced by this rock are something to be commended. The first line f the article begins with McPhee describing the Plymouth Rock as a " Glacial erractic at rest in exotic terraine". That in itself is a visual. The whole article was a bit confusing overall as I do nt knw much about rocks nor the places that McPhee was describing. The part that really hit home with me was when McPhee introduced Paul Choquette. The Departmend of Envirment Management was in search of someone with excellent masonry work who couldsave what little was left of Plymouth Rock. McPhee described the process eight men applied, in the end it was only Paul Choquette and another man and it came down to bids. Choquette bid was a dollar. This part of the article made me realize on a deeper level the importance that this rock help for people. Choquette was will to work his artistic magic for absolutely no monetary gain because of his beliefs in its preservation. The job was described as pulling the tonsils out of Lincoln, an easy procedure but on someone so crucial ( I could not find the exact quote!). People asked Choquette why/ how he could even be interested in this sort of specialty. "It intrigues me. Everything today is so fast track. You Know-- you work it up and say, 'Where's the check?' ". This quote by Choquette makes you realize that he is not doing this for the money but for the love of the planet. This article is allowing us to realize that we need to step back and look at the world from a different perspective. McPhee wants to describe to the world that things such as Plymouth Rock in order to keep us in control of what we consider important.
